SURBHI RAGHUVANSHI

DECEMBER 2023

Everybody in the hall was singing and dancing. Niharika di and I were sitting on a cute low stool. “Ye sab mere jaane se khush hai?” She said and I chuckled.

“Of course not, Di but they're happy that you're getting married.”

“Arey Di chalo na.” (Arey Di come na.) Arana came towards us and pulled us on the dance floor.

“Okay so the whole family wants a competition between Niharika di and you.” Arana said and we both denied at first because we didn't want that. But after all the elders requested we agreed.

“Don't you think we should get some time to prepare?” I said but everybody started laughing and one of our relatives replied.

“Apne Sangeet ke liye prepare kar liyo, abhi Niharika ke Sangeet ke liye toh Bina preparation perform karna padega.” (Prepare for your Sangeet, you'll have to perform without preparation for Niharika's sangeet.)

“Niharika is the winner.” Naani said and we all cheered. “And for me, our Surbhi is the winner.” Di came towards me and caressed my cheeks, lovingly. We hugged and all our relatives cooed.

We sat down on the low stool as the women who were going to apply mehendi had arrived.

“Ma’am do I have to write any name?” The woman asked and my eyes fell on the empty space for a name.

“Reyansh Kapoor likh dijiye.” (Please write, Reyansh Kapoor.) Arana said and as soon as the last was about to draw his name on my hand I stopped her.

“Kunwar Reyansh Kapoor.” I said and she nodded, giving me a warm smile.

The mehendi design looked so good. It was a peacock feather with a lot more designs like circles and everything. Somewhere painted, somewhere just lines and drawings.

I was so busy with the wedding that I couldn't talk to Reyansh. Feelings started developing in my heart steadily. I felt so weak, just like I was back in highschool. I hated this feeling but it was what it was.

Being away from him doesn't make me feel normal. I want to be near him but it isn't possible yet. I picked up my phone and opened his contact. I wanted to call him, hear his voice but I didn't want it at the same time.

As soon as I was about to keep my phone away I got a call.

“Kahan thi aap itne dino se?” (Where have you been for so many days?) I heard his voice and my soul gave up. It felt like home, his voice was all I craved.

“Hum toh shaadi mein busy the, aap kahan the?” (I was busy with the wedding, where were you?) I said and I could feel tears gathering in my eyes.

“I am busy with my best friend's wedding.” He said and I chuckled.

“Itne busy ki call bhi nahi kar paye?” (You were so busy that you couldn't even call?) I said and he sighed.

“Kahan hai aap?” ( Where are you?) He asked and I tried to tease him.

“Ek bed par, jo ek room mein hai, vo room ek ghar ka hissa hai, aur vo Ghar humari mausi ji ka hai.” ( On a bed, which is in a room, that room is a part of a house, and that house belongs to my Mausi ji. )

I said and I could hear the sharp breath he took right after I finished.

“Yaad sata rahi hai aapki. (Your memories are troubling me/ I miss you.) He said and I giggled.

“Itni yaad aa rahi hai toh le chalein sang humein.” (If you're missing me so much, then take me along with you.)

“Aap kahein toh Maa Sa se keh kar vivah ka muhurat nikalva dein?” ( If you say so, then should I tell Maa to fix a time for our marriage ?) He said and my heart skipped a beat. He was waiting for my consent all this time?

“You were waiting for my consent?” I said and he let out a deep chuckle which sent shivers down through my spine.

“Late realisation, but yes, I was waiting for your consent.” He said and I smiled.

The only thing I needed in a man was patience, patience to understand love, patience to understand needs and desires, patience to discover them with me, patience to understand my problems and situation, patience to know me as a whole and he was passing all the rest one by one.

“Kar lijiye Rani-Sa se baat.”(You should talk to the Queen.)

“She's my Maa Surbhi, call her Maa.”

PROCESSION

“AREY BARAAT AA GAYI.” ( The procession arrived.) Dhruv bhai said and all the sisters started rushing towards the gate.

A ribbon was attached to the sides of the gate, this was a kind of ritual that'll bring us money haha.

We saw Jiju coming on a white decorated horse and as soon as they reached near the gate he got down to dance a bit with all his relatives.

Nacho nacho, abhi toh jeeb Khali hogi.

(Dance, dance, your pockets are going to be empty after this.)

Finally they stopped in front of the gate and asked for a pair of scissors for cutting the ribbon.

“Don't you think it's too soon for that?” I said and all the girls from our side laughed.

“So what do I have to do?” He asked us politely.

“You see Jija ji, there's a counter there and you just have to prepare something for Didi to eat and if it's good we'll let you in, but you'll have to pay some amount.” I said and he looked around.

“But can I take somebody to help me?” He said and I nodded but suddenly my eyes fell on the procession, there were so many women, and now I think he is being clever. Before he could talk to someone I interrupted.

“BUT IT SHOULD BE A BOY.” I said and he looked around to find a man who could help him but all of them looked at him , smiling nervously because they did not know how to cook.

“Urgh, where is my best friend?” He said frustratingly.

“At your service sir.” I heard a familiar voice and my eyes fell on a figure.

He was wearing a dark blue kurta and pyjama with an overcoat of blue colour but a little different because it had golden designs in it. As I was checking him out from head to toe, my eyes fell on his blue jodhpuri juttis. His well combed wavy hair looked good enough and his brown eyes shining below the yellow and golden lights.

But what was Reyansh doing here?

“C'mon bro, we need to cook.” Jiju said and walked towards the counter. My gaze was fixed on Reyansh and it moved with the slow and silent steps he took towards the counter.

I saw them putting on an apron and he helped jiju with making two chapatis and a small bowl of sabzi for Didi.

He never told me that he knows how to cook.

They completed everything and I saw Reyansh cleaning the counter. They both walked in front of the ribbon again but this time we made eye contact.

“Here, you should probably hurry up.” Jiju said and Arana took it from his hand. She immediately went away as we waited.

“So , do you still need the payment?” Jiju whispered and I laughed.

“Paise toh hum lekar rahenge.” ( We will take the money.) I said and all the girls from our side started clapping their hands.

“Aane do baraat ko. Didi loved the taste.” (Let the procession come in, didi loved the taste.) Arana said as she ran out of the house.

“But before everything, we need approximately -”

She stopped and started counting all the cousin sisters Niharika di has including us. There were 12 of us.

“24 thousand jiju.” Arana said and the procession gasped. “Don't you think it's too much?” Reyansh interrupted and Arana looked him in the eyes.

“Aapki shaadi hai?” ( Is it your wedding?) She asked while giving him a very big smile but he shook his head.

“Toh phir aapko kis baat ki tension? In fact aap ki shaadi mein toh main isse jyada paise lungi.”( Then why are you stressing? In fact, I'll ask for a bigger amount in your wedding.) She said and all the people present in the area started laughing.

I looked down at the floor because I couldn't bear this anymore. I was feeling shy for no damn reason. All of them knew that we were going to get married soon, and I couldn't help but blush.

“Agar biwi aapki behen jaisi Hui na, toh hum apni puri jaayedaat aapke naam likh denge.” (If the wife is like your sister, then I'll give you my whole property .) He said and everyone started cheering.

“Di, you have to get married to him, I need his property.” Arana said and everyone laughed.

I looked up and found him looking at me, in fact not only him but the whole procession was looking at me.

“Jokes aside Surbhi, please decrease the amount.” Jiju said and I shook my head.

“Not at all, either you give it or you know-” I said but he stopped me.

“Ashubh baatein nahi karte.” ( Don't say inauspicious things.) He said and forwarded his hands.

“Reyansh nikaal yaar 24 thousand.” (Take out 24 thousand, Reyansh.) He said and Reyansh looked at me.

“You for sure want 24 thousand?” He asked and I nodded. “Ji.” (Yes)  I said and I heard the ladies giggling.

Just after a few seconds they gave us the amount we asked for and I gave Jiju the scissors.

“Arey mithai toh laao.” ( Bring the sweets.) Somebody said but I shook my head. “Please bring the biscuits.” I said and Arana bought the biscuits.

“These biscuits are Didi’s favourite, so we thought you should have these.” I said and shoved the biscuit into his mouth and all of us ran away.

“EW THAT IS LITERALLY TOOTHPASTE SURBHI.” I heard him yelling but we all ran inside the house laughing.

                   ______________

The procession was going to stay here for a night and tomorrow is the official marriage. I went inside the hall and I looked around as I saw the baraat enjoying the food and the arrangements were very well done.

I went up to the stage. “I'll be handling the procession so if you need anything, then please feel free to come to me. Thank you.” I said and stepped down from the stage.

As soon as I was about to leave the hall, I heard Jiju calling me.

“Surbhi, uh can you help me, I want to meet Niharika.” He said and I laughed.

“You know that you aren't allowed to see her before the wedding right?” I said and he nodded.

“Please?” He said and his eyes were literally pleading.

“Okay, I'll help you.” I said and he looked all happy.

I was walking towards Di’s room when I felt a manly touch firmly holding my wrist and pulling me towards himself. My eyes immediately closed as I was scared, not knowing who it was but deep down I was ready to attack.

“Pehle khud ke pati se toh mil lein.” (First meet your own husband.) I looked up and saw Reyansh.

He was in his casuals unlike all the time. The fighting mode literally turned off and

I hugged him. Because of my small height , my face rested on his chest.

“Aapse dur nhi Jaa rahe.” (I'm not going away from you.) I said and I heard him chuckle.

“Jaa bhi nahi sakti aap. ( You cannot go.) He said and spinned me. I was now against the wall, more like pinned against the wall.

“Surbhi, you look so pretty.” He said and I smiled. Before I could reply , he leaned in and started kissing my neck.

This was tickling me and I tried to stop him but he didn't stop, in fact he continued. He took some part of my skin between his sharp teeth and started sucking it. A wave of pain rushed through my body and a moan left my mouth. My hands made their way towards his head and my hands fisted around his hair.

He continued sucking the area for a while and left it. When I thought this was the end , he took another part of my skin between his teeth to bite, he left it and licked the same part. This was giving me nothing but pleasure. He again took the same part between his teeth and sucked it hard this time. I'm sure this will look like a bruise.

I was so overwhelmed by the way he was leaving marks on my neck, that I lost track over time. We were there for almost 30 minutes now but he still couldn't get enough of me.

I felt him leaving soft and gentle kisses on the marks he left and pain would start rushing through my body as soon as his lips touched the marks. The low moans that left my mouth did not stop until he finally looked into my eyes.

“You're a witch Surbhi.” He said and I chuckled. I leaned in towards his ear and whispered.

“And a bitch in bed.”
